Neighborhood Traditions

One of the things that keeps Colony West so vibrant is the fact that we know our neighbors. We know each other's kids. We recognize each other's dogs. When we're out walking, we stop to chat. And because of that, we look out for each other. But what created and sustains this unique bond of community? The traditions that were started and passed down from resident to resident over the generations and that continue today have to be a large contributing factor. Here's a history of the major neighborhood traditions and how they started!

Christmas Eve Luminaries

The luminaries have become a Colony West tradition enjoyed by not only our residents but also others throughout the area. Hundreds of visitors walk or drive through our neighborhood on December 24 to see the luminaries each year.  Some believe the luminaries light the way for Christ, while some of the young kids think it lights the way for Santa. No matter what you believe, these lights in the darkness are a remarkable sight and a wonderful way to celebrate the season.

Kathi Knop started the event in 1987. At that time, our luminaries consisted of paper bags containing sand and candles.  Each family would purchase the bags and candles and then get grocery bags of sand from the Knop’s driveway.  The bags were set out and lit about 5:30 and normally burned only four hours or so.

Since then, we have progressed to using sand-filled plastic tubes (which you should have received from the previous homeowner) and 15-hour votive candles.  These have proven to be easier to work with, longer lasting and better for the environment.

Annual Halloween Party

Colony West families gather prior to trick or treating for hot dogs, crockpots of chili, drinks and fun before trick or treating begins!

Annual Fourth of July Party

The annual Fourth of July party the evening of July 4 has been a tradition for 40+ years! While the past few years since COVID have been different, the tradition will be back in 2025 with a DJ, kid and adult games including the water balloon toss and sack races, food, bike and stroller parade and more!

Project Uplift

Colony West participates in a monthly service project. On the first Wednesday of the month, families from CW make a casserole (recipe provided) and one neighbor drives the food down to  Uplift. This tradition has been going on for 30+ years. An sign-up is sent annually each summer.
